Northwest Louisianians (unofficially) kick-off summer with a celebration of crawfish and Cajun culture at their Mudbug Madness festival. The 3-day event is held in downtown Shreveport at their Festival Plaza (they have festivals for everything so it’s only fitting that they have a designated venue) and features live music, of the zydeco and country variety, and local art and food vendors. Speaking of the food, it’s like fair food to the extreme, everything comes fried and the menus consistently feature entrees like: boudin balls, alligator, catfish, gumbo and of course, crawfish.
They cook the crawfish by the ton. Well, maybe not that much but by batches of 100+lbs. The experienced vendors have motorized systems and palets of potatoes and corn on hand – each basket traditionally comes with a few veggies which are my favorite part because they soak up the spicy seasoning and there is no peeling involved.
We lucked out with sunshine and a little breeze — it’s beginning to feel hot and humid here, so we grabbed a few refreshments, a seat by the band and dug in to our basket of mudbugs.
Best part: I checked an item off my Shreveport Bucket List.
